Summary:
A one-off 90 minute heart-wrenching and shocking drama for BBC 1. Set in 1960’s it tells the tale of Anne Marie, a young Irish girl who becomes pregnant out of wedlock and is sent by her family to a Magdalen Laundry convent to repent her sins. Through Anne Marie’s experiences we witness the hardships and abuse suffered by the girls and women in the convent and the strong friendships that develop. Anne Marie fights against the nuns to keep her baby but ends up losing the battle. However, hope appears in the form of a local man who takes pity on her and offers her marriage as a way out.
